- Pack insect repellent, lagoon friendly sunscreen, and a hat.
- Make sure your phone is unlocked if you wish to purchase a travel Sim Card. These can be purchased from the Vodafone store outside the arrivals terminal. Sim Cards are $49.
- Remember to book your rental car well in advance, these can book out quickly.
- Remember to notify your bank of your travel.
- Our currency is the New Zealand Dollar. Whilst there are plenty of ATMs on the island, we encourage you to have a little cash on hand for local market stalls and fruit stands.
- Have your accommodation address handy upon coming through immigration at Rarotonga Airport.
- Decide on what tours and activities you would like to do, as many are booked out weeks before your preferred date. Ie. The Buggy Tours, Antipodes Restaurant and the snorkeling tours.

Getting Around:
- Taxis – There are many taxi services available. They cost approximately $20 per person per trip.
- Buses – The buses are run by Cooks Buses. Download the TransportMe App to see the buses moving in real time. There are two to choose from; the Clockwise and the Anti-Clockwise – Easy!
- Rental Vehicles – We like to describe Rarotonga as one big playground. 32km in circumference, we recommend hiring a car so that you can explore the backroads and move about with ease. We recommend the following rental companies:
- Island Car & Bike Hire
- Avis
- Polynesian Rentals
- Go Cook Islands
- Rarotonga Rentals
Safety And Comfort:
- Roosters – Watch out for these little guys on the road, they are known for sprinting across to the other side just when you are passing
- Dogs – We are blessed with the cutest furry companions on our island. Most houses do not have fences, so when their owners head off to work, the dog’s enjoy the day on the beach with our visitors. Please do not feed the dogs or encourage them to stay with you, not all guests love dogs!
- Our Roads – In Rarotonga we drive on the left hand side of the road and our fastest speed limit is 50km p/hr. In school zones and shopping areas, the speed limit drops to 30km p/hr.
- Your Belongings – Whilst we pride ourselves on being a safe and friendly country, as with anywhere there can be the odd petty theft. Please keep your valuables on you at all times. Do not leave your bags on the beach whilst you go swimming. Keep them locked in your car.
